New Richmond Hill Restaurant: Maxx Seafood & Grill

Maxx Seafood and Grill recently opened up in Richmond Hill in the plaza where all the other restaurants are clustered at East Beaver Creek & Highway 7. Maxx keeps the same loungey decor from its predecessor, Cafe Mirage (which also means Cafe Mirage is no longer around and there is one less crepe spot in Richmond Hill). They have your regular steak and potatoes options, but they also offer some other exotic dishes that you wouldn't expect from a steak and potatoes kind of restaurant, like Curry Crab or Pad Thai. On the whole, their dishes were good, not great, but they make up for it with service and that's the thing that inclines me to return.

We had their PEI Mussels in a Creamy Leek Chardonnay sauce ($12.95). Delish! They gave more mussels than what was shown in the picture, but I just wanted to show you the sauce. The sauce was really well made with clear tones of the wine and the garlic. The mussels were fresh and we didn't get any barely-opened shells! I hate it when that happens. If you generally like mussels or you're looking for an appetizer to share, I'd recommend this.

The Thai Curry Crab was what I had ordered and I REALLY recommend this if you don't mind spending a little more. The smallest size lobster you can order is 2 pounds, which racked up to about $38.00. But the curry was really really good, potentially even better than the infamous curry from Saigon Star. They also provided a plate of naan, for more happy curry dipping. I also appreciated that the crab leg shells were already cracked for us so it was easy to eat.

The most disappointing part of the meal was the steak. But the service they gave was so nice that I almost don't want to say this part. The meat was much too chewy like it had been in the freezer too long and when we cut into the centre of the steak the meat still cold. When we told them, they took our plate back in to get reheated. When they brought it back out to us, they had replated the steak, but all the sides were gone! They were gracious about the sides though and gave us new ones. Not a big issue, but while their service was great, the food aspect for the steak was disappointing.

I would come back here and give their other dishes a try. But maybe just not for the steak.

    1. I wish they had something special like that too! They just have the regular desserts at the moment. But apparently they offer free salsa lessons on Salsa nights sometimes during the week! You should check it out :)

  2. Bought the Travelzoo voucher and tried to use it last night ( sat. 23rd, 2012) Well reservations were for 7:30, we arrived at 7:15. Sat at the table for 2 hr's for a salad. All the people around us that had vouchers, had the same experience and some even left. Tables that had no voucher had a full basket of bread..we had 2 buns. Were told that they we were short staffed..right...with 3 ladies at the bar talking and doing nothing...while people are waiting 2 hrs for a salad. This place is to be avoided at all costs...it's to bad that 469 people so far have been trapped into buying this voucher. I am asking for a refund monday morning.

    1. Oh man! Tell me how your experience is trying to get a refund. I think it's really unjustified when they give you worst service or quality because you have a coupon. It reflects poorly on the integrity of the restaurant. Thanks for sharing though

  3. Used my Travelzoo last night. Service is a little bit slow, but think they were understaffed. Restaurant was pretty busy for Wed.night. We were offered soup and salad, voucher says choice of soup OR salad. Chowder was good but french onion was salty. Portions were very generous - we thoroughly enjoyed our surf and turf. Steak very tender and tasty. Lobster fresh and delicious (staff explained they had a live tank and used angus beef). We did only get two measly dinner rolls but thought the voucher was worth it.
